The 2nd Ohio Cavalry campaigned in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia and Indian Territory, traveling some 27,000 miles and fighting in 97 battles. This unit served under 23 different Union Generals, including Custer and Sheridan, and was part of the force that captured General John Morgan. 3rd Ohio Cavalry Regiment:

History:

Organized in September, 1861, under Colonel Lewis Zahm, for three years service; in the following April it moved with Buell's army through Tennessee. It participated in the siege of Corinth and operated in northern Alabama and Mississippi during the summer of 1862, and in September followed in the pursuit of Bragg through Tennessee and Kentucky. In October a portion of the Regiment was surrounded near Ashland Ky. by John Morgan's forces and obliged to surrender. Afterwards, the remaining portion with Cavalry and Infantry, attacked Morgan's camp, capturing his equipage and many prisoners. The Regiment during the winter had many engage­ments with the enemy, and the following summer advanced with Rosecrans' army, fighting at Chickamauga and elsewhere with mar­ked success. In January, 1864, the Regiment re-enlisted, and in May moved to Decatur Alabama, became the advance guard of Blair's 17th Corps and then joined Sherman's Atlanta campaign (Col. Charles B. Seidel [vgl. Evans, Sherman's Horsemen S. 72]), ta­king part in the battles of Kenesaw, Peach Tree Creek and Decatur. It joined Stoneman's raid, and after the fall of Atlanta pursued Hood north, fighting at Franklin and Nashville. Again it followed Hood south and afterwards joined Wilson's raid, losing heavily at Selma. One detachment rode through to the Gulf. The Regiment was discharged August 14, 1865.

Während der Shiloh Campaign gehörte das 3rd Battalion der 5th Ohio Cavalry unter Major C. S. Hayes zur 3rd Division MajGen Lew Wallace in Grant’s Army of the Tennessee. Die Einheit war als Vorposten bei Adamsville / Süd-Tennessee eingesetzt, wo sie am 31.3.1862 nachts von CS-Cavalry (Robinson’s Tennessee Cavalry Company) angegriffen wurde (vgl. Ricker’s Battalion der 5th Ohio Cavalry in einer Stärke von 400 Mann war der 5th Division BrigGen William T. Sherman zugeord­net. Am Vorabend der Schlacht von Shiloh wurde das die 5th Ohio Cavalry in der Nach vom 2.4./3.4.1862 zur Aufklärung zusammen mit der 54th Ohio Infantry eingesetzt, die einen Hinterhalt bei Jack Greer's House am Lick Creek legte (vgl. Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 133 mit Karte S. 103). Am 4.4.1862 gegen 3:30 pM wurde Ricker’s Battalion von der 5th Ohio Cavalry bei Jack Chamber’s House an der Ridge Road südwestlich Shiloh Church zum Entsatz der 72nd Ohio Infantry eingesetzt (vgl. Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 134). In­folge der Neugliederung der US-Artillery in Grant’s Army wurde Ricker’s Battalion am 5.4.1862 abgezogen, so daß Sherman’s Divi­sion zunächst ohne Cavalry war (vgl. 12th Regiment Ohio Cavalry:

Organized November 24, 1863, under Colonel Robert W. Ratliff, it moved into Kentucky. In May, 1864, it joined General Bur­bridge's raid on Saltville and afterwards returned in pursuit of John Morgan, and engaged him successfully at Mt. Sterling and Cyn­thiana. In September it made another raid upon Saltville, and again in November passed Cumberland Gap under Generals Burbridge and Stoneman, driving the Rebels before them. The salt works, foundries and immense stores were destroyed. In the spring of 1865 it joined Stoneman's celebrated raid into Virginia and North Carolina, releasing Union prisoners at Salisbury and cutting the railroads in all directions. After Lee's surrender it aided in the capture of Jeff Davis, and moving through South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama, captured Generals Bragg and Wheeler with their escorts. It finally rendezvoused at Nashville and was mustered out November 14, 1865.

Battery never fully organized. One Section mustered in February 15, 1862. Attached to 4th Division, Army of the Tennessee. At Shiloh, Tenn., April 6-7, 1862. Lost guns and organization discontinued April 20, 1862, the men being transferred to 7th, 10th and 14th Ohio Batteries.

 

Während der Shiloh Campaign gehörte die Battery zur 4th Division BrigGen Stephen A. Hurlbutt in Grant’s Army of the Tennessee. Teilnahme am Battle of Shiloh. Die Battery fuhr im Battle of Shiloh am 6.4.1862 gegen 9:30 über die Wheatfield Road in der Nähe von Sarah Bell’s Field auf, wobei die Battery gegen den Befehl des Divisionskommandeurs zu weit vorne abgeprotzt wurde, statt wie befohlen nördlich auf einer leichten Anhöhe. Die Battery kam deshalb sofort unter schweren Beschuß durch die CS-Florida Battery, ein Munitionswagen erhielt einen Treffer, was eine große Explosion auslöste. Es gab mehrere Verwundete und einen Toten, die Be­dienungsmannschaften flohen. Die Geschütze wurden aufgegeben und gingen mit einer Ausnahme verloren. Divisionskommandeur Hurlbutt war derart wütend, daß er nach der Schlacht die Battery auflöste und Captain Mayers in Haft nahm. Eine Untersuchungs­kommission die auf Anordnung von Ohio-Governor Benjamin Thomas eingesetzt wurde, sprach Captain Myers frei. In der Nach­kriegszeit äußerte sich Captain Felix Robertson, der Batteriechef der Florida Battery, und beschuldigte den Divisionskommandeur Hurlbutt, für den schlechten Einsatz verantwortlich zu sein (vgl. Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 193 mit Karte S. 194).

History:

ten Independent Companies of Sharpshooters were recruited and partly organized at different periods during the war; all became parts of regiments in the field, and no distinct organization was affected from them. Three full companies were assigned to other states, Company G, organized at Dayton, to the Fourteenth Missouri; Company H, organized at Findlay, and Company K, at Lima, to the Sixty-Sixth Illinois; later, by special request, Company G was transferred to the same Regiment. The three Companies re-enlisted in December, 1863, and later took part in the Atlanta campaign, Sixteenth Corps, Army of the Tennessee.

- Glendening, Abram: Letters, 1863-67. Six letters from or about Glendening and his brothers, all soldiers in the Union Army. Glende­ning and his family were from Mill Creek, West Virginia, but he and his brothers emigrated to Ohio when they refused to fight for the Confederacy. Glendening enlisted in the 5th Ohio Sharpshooters in December 1863. He died in May 1864 from a gunshot wound at Hallowell's Landing, Alabama. Letters by Glendening focus on his reasons for not fighting with the Confederacy, and after his death the letters by friends and family focus on his death and the location of his grave. Organized at Camp Cleveland, Ohio, and mustered in January 27, 1863. At Headquarters of Generals Rosecrans and Thomas, Commanding Army and Dept. of the Cumberland, March, 1863, to May, 1864, and at Headquarters of General Sherman, Commanding Military Division Mississippi, May 20, 1864, to July 17, 1865. Mustered out July 28, 1865.

 

During the summer and autumn of 1862, the 7th Independent Company Ohio Volunteer Sharpshooters organized at Cleveland, Ohio. The men in the company were to serve for three years. The 7th formally mustered into service on January 27, 1863. The 7th eventually also became known as Sherman's Body-Guard, as the company was assigned to protect Union General William T. Sherman.

 

In 1863, the 7th was assigned to General William Rosecrans's command. The company participated in the Battles of Chickamauga, Georgia (September 19 and 20, 1863), Lookout Mountain (November 24, 1863), and Missionary Ridge (November 25, 1863). During Sherman's Atlanta Campaign, which occurred during the late spring and summer of 1864, officials assigned the 7th to be the personal bodyguard of General Sherman. The 7th began this duty on May 20, 1864 and continued to serve in this capacity until the company mustered out of service in July 1865. During the Atlanta Campaign, the company had eight men captured during a foraging expedition to Marietta, Georgia. The 7th also participated in Sherman's March to the Sea of late 1864 and in the Carolinas Campaign during the first four months of 1865. At the war's conclusion, the company marched in the Grand Review at Washington, DC and accompanied Sherman to St. Louis, Missouri.

 

Upon the 7th's expiration of its term of service, General Sherman issued the following statement:

HEAD-QUARTERS MILITARY DIVISION OF THE MISSISSIPPI, St. Louis, Missouri

July 17, 1865.

The General commanding tenders to the officers and men of the 7th Independent Company of Ohio Sharpshooters his personal thanks for their long and valuable services near his person in the eventful campaigns beginning at Chattanooga, on the 1st of May, 1864, and ending with the war.

He commends them as a fine body of intelligent young volunteers, to whom he attributes his safety in battles, marches, and bivouacks in Georgia and the Carolinas.

He wishes them long life and a proud consciousness of having done their duty with a cheerfulness, precision, and intelligence worthy the great cause in which they were engaged, and he bespeaks for them a kind and generous welcome back to their old homes in Ohio.
