The Opposing Forces at Shiloh, B & L, a.a.O., I, S. 537) zur 1st Brigade Col John A. McDowell 5th Division BrigGen William T. Sherman in Grant’s Army of the Tennessee ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 320). Das Regiment bildete am Vor­abend der Schlacht von Shiloh die äußerste Rechte von Grant’s Army of the Tennessee; eine Abteilung sicherte die Owl Creek Bridge. Die 6th Iowa war mit Springfield Rifles ausgerüstet ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 132). Am 4.4.1862 gegen 3:00 PM wurde eine Company der 6th Iowa Infantry an der Owl Creek Bridge von CS Cavalry angegriffen ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 135). Am 6.4.1862 gegen 10:00 eingesetzt im Rahmen der Brigade in Verteidigungslinie 400 yards nördlich der Purdy-Hamburg Road bei Cre­scent Field ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 172). LtCol war betrunken, wurde sofort abgelöst und durch Captain John Williams ersetzt ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 172).

 

Am späten Vormittag des 6.4.1862 war die US-Verteidigungslinie auf beiden Seiten der Pittsburg-Corinth Road, die von den Truppen aus der 1st Division MajGen John A McClernand und der 5th Division BrigGen William T. Sherman besetzt war, teilweise überrollt und mußte zurückgenommen werden. Von den vier Brigaden aus Sherman's 5th Division war McDowell's Brigade intakt geblieben. Die Truppen aus beiden Divisionen bezogen nördlich im Raum um Jones Field und Sowell Field neue Verteidigungslinien. McDo­well's Brigade zog sich befehlsgemäß zunächst nach Crescent Field zurück, wo die Regimenter Front nach West machten und sich Scharmützel mit der angreifenden 3rd Brigade Col Preston Pond lieferte. Befehlsgemäß ging die Brigade McDowell weiter in nord­östlicher Richtung zurück und bezog in Sowell's Field eine neue Verteidigungslinie mit Front nach Süden ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 185 mit Karte S. 181 uns S. 187).

 

Von Jones Field aus erfolgte gegen 11:30 der erste US-Gegenangriff im Battle of Shiloh ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 185 mit Karte S. 181 uns S. 187). Bei dem ersten US-Gegenangriff in Shiloh am 6.4.1862 während des Artilleriegefechts, überrannte gegen 12:00 die 11th Iowa Infantry aus 1st Brigade Col Abraham C. *Hare / 1st Division MajGen John A McClernand zusammen mit der 11th Il­linois und 20th Illinois aus 2nd Brigade Col C. Carroll Marsh / 1st Division MajGen John A McClernand die im nördlichen Woolf Field eingesetzte Cobb’s Kentucky Battery und die Sektion von Polk’s Tennessee Battery ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 188 mit Kar­te 187). Nachdem die am rechten US-Flügel eingesetzte 46th Ohio Infantry unter Col. Thomas *Worthington während des US-Ge­genangriffs in einen Flankierungsangriff der CS-Truppen geraten war und unter großen Schwierigkeiten zurückging, wurde die 40th Illinois zur Verstärkung der 46th Ohio Infantry eingesetzt. Die 40th Illinois Infantry geriet nun ebenfalls in den energisch geführten CS-Angriff der Brigade von Col Trabue und erlitt erhebliche Verluste. Der weitere Angriff der CS-Truppen richtete sich nun gegen McDowell's Brigade, die nun zerschlagen wurde. Die 6th Iowa Infantry erlitt hierbei 52 Gefallene ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 189 mit)..

Das Regiment traf unmittelbar vor Beginn der Schlacht per Schiffstransport aus St. Louis ein. Grant setzte unmit­telbar bei seinem Eintreffen in Pittsburg Landing am 6.4.1862 gegen 9:00 das Regiment auf den Höhen bei Pittsburg Landing ein, um das Durchbrechen von Stragglers nach der Landing zu unterbinden ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 175). Das neu aufgestellte und völ­lig unerfahrene Regiment traf gegen 11:00 am rechten US-Flügel ein und lief in Marschformation bei Jones Field in einen Hinterhalt ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 186 mit Karte S. 187). Zusammen mit der 16th Iowa Infantry übernahm das Regiment gegen die an­greifende 1st Brigade Col Robert M. Grant setzte unmittelbar bei seinem Eintreffen in Pittsburg Landing am 6.4.1862 gegen 9:00 das Regiment auf den Höhen bei Pittsburg Landing neben der 15th Iowa Infantry ein, um das Durchbrechen von Stragglers nach der Lan­ding zu unterbinden ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 175). Chambers describes the routine of camp life at the two cities, the morale of the troops, and the activities of the enemy. One letter, dated May 7, 1864, vividly describes Milton's experiences during the Cam­den Expedition and includes mention of battles at Elkin's Ford (Nevada County), Prairie D'Ane (Nevada County), and Jenkins' Ferry (Grant County), and the participation of black Union troops (Univ. of Arkansas, Fayetteville: Manuscript Resources for the Civil War, Compiled by Kim Allen Scott, 1990).

Aus Kompanien von Nebraska, Missouri und Iowa zusammengesetzt, aufgestellt im Februar 1862; most of the men had reenlisted as veteran volunteers in December 1863, turned in their arms and equipment, and gone home on furlough. Since returning to duty, they had encountered difficulty in getting remounted and reequipped. Major Harlon Baird, commanding Companies A, B, C, H, L, and M, stationed sixty-five miles south of Nashville near Pulaski, Tennessee, had procured enough Sharps carbines and .44 caliber Colt re­volvers to arm his men, but no horses. Conversely, Lieutenant Colonel Matthewson T. Patrick, posted at Nashville with Companies D, E, F, G, I, and K, had 360 horses and enough saddles and bridles for the whole regiment, but only a few carbines. Die Battery war Teil der US-Truppen, die während Grant's Vormarsch vom November 1862 Richtung Holly Springs entlang der Missi­ssippi Central Railroad, zeitgleich von Helena / Arkansas über den Mississippi vorstießen um die CS-Truppen in der Flanke an­zugreifen ( Bearss, a.a.O., S. 77 ff). Torrence Regiment nahm am 3. Dezember 1862 an einem Raid von Mitchell's Cross Road ( Karte: Davis Nr. 154 E 9 F 10) nach Coffeeville / Mississippi teil, der von Cadwallader C. Washburn's Cavalry durchgeführt wurde ( Bearss, a.a.O., S. 89).

Im Frühjahr 1862 Teilnahme an der Pea Ridge Campaign in William *Vandever's Brigade, Col Eugene A. *Carr's 4th Division in Sa­muel R. *Curtis Army of the Southwest. Die Battery umfaßte 1862 vier 6-pounder Guns und zwei 12-pounder Howitzers ( Shea / Hess: Pea Ridge, a.a.O., S. 334).
