Sherman in Grant's Army of the Tennessee ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 138). Das Camp der 4th Illinois Cavalry befand sich am Morgen des 6.4.1862 neben den Stellungen von Waterhouse’s Battery nahe dem Divisionshauptquartier Sherman’s; aufgrund des konföderierten Durchbruchs bei der 53rd Ohio Infantry und 57th Ohio Infantry mußte die 4th Illinois ihr Camp fluchtartig verlassen ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 160 mit Karte S. 165).

 

Nach dem überraschenden Rückzug der CS-Truppen von der Tallahatchie Line am 1.12.1862 erhielt die US-Cavalry von Grant's Army of the Tennessee unter Col *Dickey den Befehl mit seiner Cavalry von Waterford ( Karte bei Bearss: Vicksburg Campaign, a.a.O., vol. I S. 58) die Verfolgung anzutreten, wobei die 4th Illinois Cavalry den Befehl erhielt, mit Teilen des Regiments unter Lt­Col William *McCulloch nordwestlich von Oxford die Zerstörung einer Eisenbahnbrücke zu verhindern ( Bearss: Vicksburg Campaign, a.a.O., vol. I S. 96).

Die Battery gehörte im Frühjahr 1862 und im Battle of Shiloh zur Divisionsartillerie in 5th Division BrigGen William T. Sherman; am Morgen des 6.4.1862 eingesetzt gegen den CS-Durchbruch durch Sherman’s Front ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 160). Hierbei schlug die Battery durch schwerem Canisterbeschuß den Angriff der 5th Tennessee Infantry zurück ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 163 mit Karte S. 165).

 

Nach dem Zusammenbruch der 3rd Brigade Hildebrand 5th Division Sherman mußte sich auch Barrett's Battery zurückziehen ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 171).

 

Gegen 11:30 wurde Barrett's Battery von US-Artilleriechef Col Ezra Taylor in einem Artillerieschwerpunkt, der neun Geschütze um­faßte, im südlichen Teil von Jones Field gegen den bevorstehenden CS-Durchbruch auf der rechten US-Front eingesetzt. Es kam zu einem Artillerieduell mit der CS-Artillery im nördlichen Woolf Field bestehend aus Cobb's Kentucky Battery sechs Geschützen und dem verbliebenen Geschütz von Polk's Battery. Nachdem sich die US-Artillery schließlich gegen 12:00 verschossen hatte, mußte sie zurückgenommen werden ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 186-188 mit Karte S. 187).

Im April 1862 und im Battle of Shiloh war die Battery zur Unterstützung der 3rd Brigade Col Jesse Hildebrand 5th Division BrigGen William T. Sherman in Grant’s Army of the Tennessee abgestellt; sie war am Morgen der Schlacht von Shiloh auf einem Hügel nörd­lich von Rea Springs eingesetzt ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 157); gegen 9:30 eingesetzt gegen den CS-Durchbruch durch Sher­man’s Front ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 160).

 

Gegen 9:30 bei den weiteren massierten CS-Angriffen gegen 9:30 durch die nach vorn geworfene 2nd Division MajGen Benjamin F. Cheatham 1st Brigade BrigGen Bushrod R. Johnson mit Blythe's Mississippi Regiment und der 154th Tennessee Infantry zog Water­house seine Battery zurück. Auf Befehl des Artilleriekommandeurs von Sherman’s Division, Major Ezra Taylor, bezog die Battery nur 300 Yards nördlich erneut Stellung, ca 100 Yards südlich der Shiloh Church. Durch eine überraschende Flankierung von Teilen der 13th Tennessee Infantry wurde die Battery überrollt und gefangengenommen ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 170 mit Karte S. 165).

 

Sechs Co’s der 13th Tennessee Infantry unter Col Vaughn führten sodann eine Flankierung nach rechts durch, gelangten durch eine Schlucht ungesehen seitlich bis auf 150 yards an Waterhouse’s Battery heran, stürmten die Battery und setzten diese außer Gefecht; dann drang die 13th Tennessee bis Shiloh Church vor, die ca 100 yards nördlich der Stellungen von Waterhouse’s Battery lag ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 170).

Die Battery B, kommandiert von Captain Reilly Madison war Belagerungsartillerie mit fünf schweren 24-pounder Belagerungsge­schützen, die gegen die Befestigungen bei Corinth eingesetzt werden sollte. Im Battle of Shiloh am Morgen des 6.4.1862 war eine Sektion der Battery B unter Lt George L. *Nispel eingesetzt bei Sherman’s 5th Division südlich von Shiloh Church zur Unterstützung der Brigade Buckland; die Battery geriet ins Artilleriefeuer der CS-Artillery bestehend aus Shoup’s Arkansas Artillery und 5th Battery Washington Artillery ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 167 mit Karte S. 165).

 

Gegen 11:30 wurde eine Sektion von Nispel’s Battery mit einem Geschütz zusammen mit zwei Geschützen aus Dresser's Battery und Barrett's Battery von US-Artilleriechef Col Ezra Taylor in einem Artillerieschwerpunkt, der neun Geschütze umfaßte, im südli­chen Teil von Jones Field gegen den bevorstehenden CS-Durchbruch auf der rechten US-Front eingesetzt. Es kam zu einem Artille­rieduell mit der CS-Artillery im nördlichen Woolf Field bestehend aus Cobb's Kentucky Battery sechs Geschützen und dem ver­bliebenen Geschütz von Polk's Battery. Nachdem sich die US-Artillery schließlich gegen 12:00 verschossen hatte, mußte sie zurück­genommen werden ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 186-188 mit Karte S. 187).

Timothy verteidigte am 6.4.1862 gegen 11:30 bei Wa­ter Oaks Pond (am Südende von Woolf's Field nördlich der Straßenkreuzung von Purdy-Hamburg Road und Pittsburg-Corinth Road zusammen mit der 11th Iowa Infantry unter LtCol William Hall; hier erfolgte der CS-Angriff der 3rd Brigade BrigGen Sterling A. M. Wood III. Army Corps MajGen William J. Hardee. Beim Angriff wurde Lt. Timothy verwundet. Die Battery wurde umzingelt und gefangen genommen ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 184).

 

Gegen 11:30 wurde eine Sektion von Nispel’s Battery mit einem Geschütz zusammen mit zwei Geschützen aus Dresser's Battery und Barrett's Battery von US-Artilleriechef Col Ezra Taylor in einem Artillerieschwerpunkt, der neun Geschütze umfaßte, im südli­chen Teil von Jones Field gegen den bevorstehenden CS-Durchbruch auf der rechten US-Front eingesetzt. Es kam zu einem Artille­rieduell mit der CS-Artillery im nördlichen Woolf Field bestehend aus Cobb's Kentucky Battery sechs Geschützen und dem ver­bliebenen Geschütz von Polk's Battery. Nachdem sich die US-Artillery schließlich gegen 12:00 verschossen hatte, mußte sie zurück­genommen werden ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 186-188 mit Karte S. 187).

Im Battle of Shiloh am 6.4.1862 gehörte die Battery unter Major Adolph *Schwartz mit drei Kanonen zur 1st Division MajGen John A McClernand. In der Fortsetzung des Angriffs stieß die 154th CS-Tennessee Infantry gegen 10:00 an der Straßenkreuzung von Pitts­burg-Corinth Road und Purdy-Hamburg Road im Rahmen vo Johnson’s (Smith’s Brigade) auf 3rd Brigade Col Julius *Raith aus 1st Division MajGen John A McClernand und Battery E 2nd Illinois Artillery (Schwartz's Art.) ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 183). Nachdem sich gegen 11:00 die Brigade Raith zurückziehen mußte, war Schwartz, der inzwischen verwundet war, ebenfalls gezwun­gen, seine Battery zurückzunehmen, wobei eines der Geschütze im Schlamm steckenblieb und zurückgelassen werden mußte, ein an­deres Geschütz kippte um, nachdem die Zugpferde erschossen worden waren ( Daniel: Shiloh, a.a.O., S. 184)..
