Col Thomas W. *Sweeny erhielt am 8.12.1862 während Grant's Overland Campaign den Befehl zu einer bewaffneten Aufklärung von Corinth nach Osten bis Muscle Shoals entlang der Memphis & Charleston Railroad ( Bearss, Vicksburg Campaign, a.a.O., I 277). Parallel hierzu befahl Grant einen Raid auf die nach Süden führende Mobile & Ohio Railroad durch die Cavalry von Col T. Lyle *Dickey (von Spring Dale in östlicher Richtung) und BrigGen Grenville M. *Dodge von Corinth nach Süden entlang der Mobi­le & Ohio Railroad ( Bearss, a.a.O., I 276-77). Sweeny 's Command bestand aus 1st Alabama Cavalry (US), 52nd Illinois Infan­try, 66th Indiana Infantry, 2nd und 7th Iowa Infantry ( Bearrs, a.a.O., S. 277 Anm. 6). Am 12.12.1862 traf die 1st Alabama Caval­ry (US) bei Cherokee / Alabama mit einer Patrouille von LtCol James M. Warren’s Alabama Cavalry Bataillon zusammen. Nach ei­nem Gefecht zogen sich die CS-Truppen bis Little Bear Creek zurück, hart verfolgt vom 1st Alabama Cavalry Regiment.
