Im Spätjahr 1862 gehörte das Regiment zu Col Cadwallader C. *Washburn’s 1st Cavalry Brigade.

 

Ende November 1862 während Grant's Vicksburg Campaign (Overland Campaign) wurden von Helena / Arkansas aus wurden US-Truppen unter Gen Hovey über den Mississippi nach Delta / Mississippi verlegt, die auf Grenada / Mississippi in den Rücken der CS-Verteidigungslinie an Tallahatchie vorstoßen sollten ( Bearss: Vicksburg Campaign, a.a.O., vol I Karte S. 58), und mit einem gleichzeitigen frontal Vorstoß von Grant's Army of the Tennessee entlang der Central Mississippi Railroad nach Süden, die CS-Kräfte zerschlagen sollte ( Bearss: Vicksburg Campaign, a.a.O., vol I S. 77 ff). Hovey’s Vorstoß von Delta nach Polkville / Mississippi dauerte vom 28.11.1862 - 7.12.1862 ( Bearss: Vicksburg Campaign, a.a.O., vol I Karte S. 58). Die Raiders, die hierbei auf Grena­da / Mississippi angesetzt waren, bestanden u.a. aus Washburn's Cavalry Brigade mit 1900 Mann. Washburne's Cavalry bestand aus 1st Brigade mit Teilen der 1st Indiana Cavalry, Teilen der 3rd und 4th Iowa Cavalry, sowie 5th Illinois Cavalry und 9th Illinois Caval­ry. Washburn unternahm hierbei einen Raid Richtung Grenada, der im Ergebnis dazu führte, daß die CS-Kräfte in Mississippi die Tullahatchie-Linie vor Grant's Truppen räumten und sich Richtung Grenada zurückzogen ( Bearss: Vicksburg Campaign, a.a.O., vol. I S. 79 mit Karte S. 56).

 

In der Nacht des 28.11.1862 griff Washburn hierbei die CS-Stellungen an der Mündung des Coldwater River (Karte Davis, a.a.O., Nr. 154) an, die von CS-Maj Green L. *Blythe's 1st Battalion Mississippi State Troops verteidigt wurden ( Bearss, a.a.O., I 80). Wash­burn wurde von CS-LtCol John S. *Griffith's 1st Texas Cavalry Brigade (später als *Ross’ Brigade bezeichnet) angegriffen, der jedoch den Erfolg des Raids nicht mehr verhindern konnte. Am 30.11.1862 stand das Regiment bei Preston / Mississippi, 16 mi nord­westlich von Grenada ( Bearss: Vicksburg Campaign, a.a.O., vol I S. 83). Captain Arthur M. *Sherman führte ein Kommando an bestehend aus ausgesuchten Soldaten der 5th Illinois Cavalry und der 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry, welches vor Washburn's Cavalry vors­tieß und am 30.11.1862 die Telegraphenverbindung und die Eisenbahnbrücke der Mississippi & Tennessee Railroad bei Garner / Mississippi nordwestlich von Grenada zerstörte und dann nach Osten zur Central Mississippi Railroad vorstieß um diese zu unterbre­chen ( Bearss, Vicksburg Campaign, a.a.O., I 83, 84, 86). Die 1st Indiana Cavalry lieferte sich bei Washburn’s erneuten Vorstoß Richtung Coffeeville / Mississippi am 3.12.1862 ein Feuergefecht mit CS-Vorposten westlich von Oakland / Mississippi ( Bearss: Vicksburg Campaign, a.a.O., vol. I S. 89) und wurde anschließend von der 27th Texas Cavalry aus John S. *Griffith’s Brigade ange­griffen ( Bearss: Vicksburg Campaign, a.a.O., vol I S. 90).

King (dessen Division im Juli 1861 in Fredericksburg lag) eine bewaff­nete Aufklärung nach *Orange Court House, Va., bestehend u.a. aus 3rd Indiana Cavalry unter Captain Lemon ab 25.7.1862 wegen der Gefahr einer Flankierung durch CS-Truppen unter Gen. Stonewall Jackson u.a. mit der 2nd Wisconsin ( Gibbon: Personal Re­collections, a.a.O., S. 41; King's Report OR 12 [2] S. 104-105; Gibbon's Report OR 12 [2] S. 105-106).

 

1863 gehörte die 3rd Indiana Cavalry zur 1st Cavalry Brigade Col William *Gamble 1st Cavalry Division Buford im Cavalry Corps Pleasonton's der Army of the Potomac. Die Brigade bestand aus 8th Illinois Cavalry, 12th Illinois Cavalry, 3rd Indiana Cavalry und 8th New York Cavalry (Gliederung B & L, a.a.O., vol III, S. 437). Das Regiment wurde am 1.7.1863 westlich Gettysburg an der Straße von Cashtown im verzögerten Gefecht eingesetzt gegen den Angriff von Archer's Brigade Division Heth ( Martin: Gettys­burg, a.a.O., S. 69, 105, 155).

Medal of Honor:

Pvt William T. Holmes erhielt am 3.5.1865 die Medal of Honor für seinen Einsatz bei Sailor's Creek for „Capture the Flag of 27th Virginia Infantry CSA" ( National Park, Medal of Honor Recipients, William T. Holmes).
