John Hunt *Morgan unternahm im Mai 1862 einen Raid nach Lebanon / Tennessee, einer Stadt in Nord-Tennessee, 20 Meilen östlich von Nashville, 10 Meilen südlich des Cumberland River. Er erreichte Lebanon am 4.5.1862. Nach der Schlacht von Shiloh hatte sich Beauregard vor Halleck’s Truppen nach Corinth zurück gezogen. Um Halleck’s Vorrücken zu verlangsamen ordnete Beauregard eine Raid durch Morgan gegen Halleck’s Verbindungen an. Morgan’s Regiment (Stärke 325 Mann) blieb die Nacht über in der Stadt. Sei­ne Wachen waren undiszipliniert, tranken Whisky und zogen sich dann zur Nachtruhe in die umliegenden Häuser zurück. Im Mor­gengrauen kam es zu einem Gegenstoß von Col Frank *Wolford mit der 1st Kentucky Cavalry (US) und der 7th Pennsylvania Caval­ry. Morgan wurde völlig überrascht, über die Hälfte von Morgan’s Männern wurde gefangen genommen. Morgan gelang in einem wilden Ritt, später bekannt als die 'Lebanon Races' über 25 Meilen nach Süden über den Stones River die Flucht. Nur 25 Mann seiner 325 starken Truppe konnte mit ihm entkommen ( Starr: Col Grenfell’s War, a.a.O., S. 48-29; Sergeant E. Tarrant: The Wild Riders of the First Kentucky Cavalry [Louisville, 1894], S. 82-91; Duke: Morgan’s Cavalry, a.a.O., S. 159-62).

 

Wolford wurde erneut gegen Morgan eingesetzt im Juli 1863 zur Abwehr von Morgan's Raid nach Kentucky, Indiana und Ohio ( Horwitz: The Longest Raid, a.a.O., S. 20). Zum ersten ernsthaften Gefecht zwischen Morgan und US-Truppen kam es am 3.7.1863 in *Columbia / Kentucky am 3.7.1863, als Morgan's Spitzen auf Wolford's 1st Kentucky Cavalry (US) trafen ( Horwitz, a.a.O., S. 21).
