Tennessees Wähler bestätigen den Austritt aus der Union (8.6.1861), in sich zerstritten kämpfen Tennessees Söhne auf beiden Seiten der Front. Über 10000 Unionisten aus Tennessee erreichten trotz der CS-Grenzblockade auf geheimen Wegen und Pässen durch die Grenzgebirge das US-Rekrutierungs-*Camp Dick Robinson, oft unter großen Gefahren. Insgesamt kämpften zwischen 20000 und 30000 Soldaten in der US-Army (vgl. Fisher: War at Every Door, a.a.O., S. 68).

Vom 30.9.1863 - 9.10.1863 führte Wheeler während der Chattanooga Campaign den Stoß der CS-Cavalry in Tennessee gegen die Verbindungen von Rosecrans' Army of the Tennessee (vgl. Welcher / Ligget: Coburn's Brigade, a.a.O., S. 136; Boatner, a.a.O., S. 910). Wheeler's Raid führte zunächst zur Zerstörung des US-Depots bei McMinnville / Tennessee durch die CS-Cavalry-Division von BrigGen John A. *Wharton. Das US-Depot wurde von der 4th Tennessee Infantry (US) unter Major Michael L. Patterson vertei­digt. Die 4th Tennessee Infantry wurde gefangengenommen, die Stadt, das Depot und die Eisenbahnbrücke über den Hickory Creek wurden zerstört (vgl. Im Mai 1862 wurde William Clift von BrigGen George W. *Morgan zum Col ernannt mit dem Auftrag in East-Tennessee eine Parti­sanen-Einheit aufzustellen und die CS-Verbindungen und Versorgungslinien zur Cumberland Gap zu unterbrechen. Clift stellte seine Einheit im Morgan County / East-Tennessee auf (vgl. Karte bei: Fisher, War at Every Door, a.a.O., S. 8) und erfüllte seinen Auftrag anfangs mit Erfolg. Im Juli / August 1862 wurde die Einheit in 7th Tennessee Infantry umbenannt und legte mehrere Hinterhalte in Morgan County und Anderson County / East Tennessee. Im August 1862 wurde die 7th Tennessee Infantry von einem CS Infantry Regiment unterstützt von Cavalry zerschlagen. Clift sammelte sein Regiment anschließend erneut und nahm seine Aktionen wieder auf, diesmal allerdings mit wenig Erfolg. Er verlegte deshalb sein Regiment Ende 1862 / Anfang 1863 nach Kentucky, wo die Einheit bis zur Invasion im August 1863 verblieb (vgl. Fisher: War at Every Door, a.a.O., S. 73).
