Apperson Family Papers, ca. 1859-1985. Blacksburg, Virginia, family. John Samuel Apperson (1837-1908) served as a hospital steward under Dr. Harvey Black in the 4th Virginia Regiment and the field hospital of the Second Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, during the Civil War, and later became a doctor. Papers include Apperson's correspondence (ca. 1850-1900) and Civil War diaries (1861-65, 6 diaries); a medallion (1893) commemorating the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's discovery of America owned by John S. Apperson; the correspondence and genealogical notes (ca. 1920-85) of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Apperson; and a notebook containing a Blacksburg history (1944) by Mary Apperson. Also includes scrapbooks (1933-50) of clippings, correspondence, and telegrams with information about the political career of Harvey Black Apperson (1890-1948), who was a State Senator and Attorney General of Virginia. Genealogical notes and sources compiled by Alex and Miriam Apperson include information on the Amiss, Crockett, Dudley, Mastin, Porter, Tynes, and Woodbridge families. Bauer, Georg (d. 1864): Letter, 1864. 0.1 cu. ft. Union soldier during the Civil War, writing from Spotsylvania Courthouse on May 20, 1864, to his daughter, about the many battles he fought in and the presence of the Confederates in the immediate area. Bauer was a native German speaker and the English in his letter is heavily Germanized (ex. "shudding duks" for "shooting ducks"). Bauer was killed two months later in the Battle of Monocacy. Baylor, William Smith Hanger (1831-1862): Correspondence. 0.1 cu. ft. Augusta County, Virginia, resident. Colonel of Augusta County Volunteer companies, and later appointed to command the 5th Virginia Regiment. In August 1862 he was made commander of the Stonewall Brigade, and was killed soon thereafter at the Battle of Second Manassas. There are three items in the collection: two letters from Baylor to his wife (April 22, and August 18, 1862), and a letter from Edward P. Walton to Mrs. Baylor written after Baylor's death (October 1, 1862). Baylor's letters refer to the destruction caused by the war, his promotion to "Colonelcy" and to Brigade Commander, his health, and General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. Walton's letter expresses sympathy to Baylor's widow, and comments on Baylor's religious conviction and General Jackson's regard for him (Virginia Tech, Univ. Berry served as a second lieutenant of Company E, Sixteenth Arkansas Infantry, and left the service after he lost a leg in fighting near Corinth, Mississippi, in 1862. Following his 1906 defeat for reelection to the Senate, Berry was appointed by the secretary of war to mark the graves of Confederate soldiers who had died in Union prison camps. Brown, John William: Diary, 1852-1865; 2 rolls. John William Brown was a merchant, planter, and businessman in Camden (Ouachita County) during the war. Born in Tennessee and educated at Louisville, Kentucky, Brown moved to Arkansas after living in Memphis, Tennessee. He tried running his own plantation in Dallas County for a while but then moved to Camden in the early 1850s. He served as a city alderman in 1857. When the war broke out, Brown remained at home and recorded his observations on his daily activities and those of his community with graphic regularity. He was an eyewitness to the Federal occupation of the town in April 1864 by troops under the command of Major General Frederick Steele, and to the subsequent return of Confederate control under soldiers commanded by Lieutenant General E. Kirby Smith. The diary has been extensively quoted in various articles in the "Arkansas Historical Quarterly" over the past three decades but has never been published in its entirety. The first roll of microfilm is of the original volumes; the second consists of a typed transcript. The original and typed transcription are held by the Arkansas History Commission (Univ. of Arkansas, Fayetteville: Manuscript Resources for the Civil War, Compiled by Kim Allen Scott, 1990).

Regest: The Clift Family Papers containing approximately 150 items (269 photocopies), span the years from ca. 1820 to 1968 and are composed of Civil War letters, Bible records, a deed, wills, genealogical data and correspondence, historical and biographical sketches, D.A.R. and Daughters of 1812 applications, and other papers. Of special interest to the historian are the letters (August 20, 1863 to October 27, 1864) of Colonel William Clift, 7th Tennessee Regiment, U.S.A., his second wife, Elizabeth, and other members of the family in Kentucky. Clift’s letters, written largely from Knoxville, Knox County, Chattanooga (Hamilton County), and Soddy (Hamilton County), Tennessee, reflect his movement and conditions in Kentucky, his imprisonment in Atlanta, and his activities in east Tennessee, where he carried messages for the Federals through Confederate lines. There are two letters reassuring Mrs. Clift of her husband’s safety, one (March 20, 1864) written by Major General George H. Thomas, and another (September 24, 1864) written by a member of his staff. One letter (undated) from Clift’s brother-in-law tells of the excitement in Kentucky regarding the Negro question, mentioning that Colonel Frank L. Wolford has denounced the President as a traitor and that Kentucky Governor Thomas E. Bramlett did not reply to the charge. During March and April 1864, Colonel Clift wrote to his wife from Soddy, Tennessee, about the possibility of her joining him, but cautioned her that there were robbers everywhere. Clift’s views toward slavery are revealed in his statements that he favored the proposal to emancipate the slaves and to leave them in the states where they “respectively belong and let them do the labor in freedom that they have done in slavery.” The Clift family papers, including a sketch concerning how the Civil War in east Tennessee affected the Clift family, center around Hamilton County, Tennessee, while the McDonald and some of the other families followed the familiar migration pattern from southwest Virginia through east Tennessee, and on to Texas. Other family lines settled in Maryland, North Carolina, and Kentucky. Anm.: Cook's 12-page war memoir is a curious document. There are two copies. The first was written 30 30, 1865, in Washington. D.C., and the second, a copy, August 3, 1865 at Hartford, Wisconsin. Both are identical. For a soldier who served in three separate outfits and took part in a score of battles, the „memoir“ is unusual in that it is almost a complete litany by Cook citing grievances against the officers of the various regiments (vgl. Correspondence, literary productions, scrapbooks, printed materials, and other documents pertaining to Jeff Davis (1862-1913), governor of Arkansas from 1901 to 1907 and United States senator from 1907 to 1913. Davis was born at Rocky Comfort to a former Confederate army chaplain who named him for the Southern president. Civil War related materials can be found in both the personal and the political papers in the Davis collection. In the family correspondence are twelve letters written between 1859 and 1862 by relatives of Davis's wife, Ina McKenzie Thatch Davis. These letters were written to Ina's mother, Jane E. Norment of Pine Bluff (Jefferson County) from her brother, Wilbur F. Norment, and her future husband, Duncan G. L. McKenzie. Wilbur was a resident of Washington, D.C., and wrote to Jane from that place on December 9, 1859, and on July 16, 1861. A third letter from Wilbur was written from Camden (Ouachita County) in 1861. Duncan McKenzie was a preacher and wrote nine letters to Jane from Little Rock (Pulaski County) between September 7, 1860, and January 11, 1862, while he was in the city attending religious conferences. Although many of Duncan's letters are personal in nature, he did describe the city's mood during the secession convention of 1861. Among the political papers in the Jeff Davis collection are case files concerning Arkansas residents who asked for the senator's assistance in reparation claims against the Federal government for confiscated and destroyed property during the Civil War. Glendening, Abram: Letters, 1863-67. Six letters from or about Glendening and his brothers, all soldiers in the Union Army. Glendening and his family were from Mill Creek, West Virginia, but he and his brothers emigrated to Ohio when they refused to fight for the Confederacy. Glendening enlisted in the 5th Ohio Sharpshooters in December 1863. He died in May 1864 from a gunshot wound at Hallowell's Landing, Alabama. Letters by Glendening focus on his reasons for not fighting with the Confederacy, and after his death the letters by friends and family focus on his death and the location of his grave. Lafayette Gregg (1825-1891) was an attorney, soldier, Arkansas Supreme Court justice, president of the Bank of Fayetteville, and one of the founding fathers of the Arkansas Industrial University (University of Arkansas). Most of the materials in this collection pertain to Lafayette's descendents in the early twentieth century, but a small group of records concern his service as colonel commanding the Fourth Arkansas Cavalry (Union). These records include the following: a medical statement dated January 1863, exempting Lafayette from service in the local militia; a travel pass and bond issued to Lafayette for a trip to Little Rock (Pulaski County) to consult with Governor Harris *Flanagin in May 1863; two orders pertaining to the Fourth Arkansas Cavalry and its operations around Little Rock; and an official discharge certificate issued to Lafayette Gregg in June 1865. This vast collection contains the complete wartime letters of Jedediah Hotchkiss, a member of the Valley Army staff. Also included are Hotchkiss' diary, postwar unpublished journal, and various short recollections. The wartime letters of John *Harman, Valley Army quartermaster, are contained herein, as are copies of T. J. Jackson's Order and Letter Books covering the entire war. Finally, these papers contain the fruits of Hotchkiss' postwar research, including dozens of letters to and from surviving participants of various battles. This postwar correspondence extends to 1896 (vgl. Tanner: Stonewall in the Valley, a.a.O., S. 574).

(John P. Nicholson's collection of Civil War manuscripts. Included are items created during the war - official reports, dispatches, communications, soldiers' letters, diaries, maps, etc., and manuscripts written after the war -- veterans' memoirs, regimental histories, poems, copies of war diaries, etc. Included are Nicholson's own Civil War letters and a typescript copy of the diary that he kept during his military service. Also included are correspondence and papers accumulated by Nicholson during his work on the translation of Comte de Paris' book, his service with the Legion of Honor and his work for the Board of Commissioners on Gettysburg monument.John Page Nicholson (1842-1921), Civil War veteran and collector. In 1861-1865, he served as regimental quartermaster with the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry regiment. After the war, he returned to Philadelphia and started collecting books and manuscripts on the Civil War. He also translated and edited two volumes of Comte de Paris' History of the Civil War in America. From 1885 to 1922, he served as recorder in chief of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, and was Secretary of the Board of Commissioners of Gettysburg Monument [Guide to American historical manuscripts in the Huntington Library, San Marino, Calif. : H. E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery, 1979]).

Ray, William Stephen (Corporal, 154th Tennessee Infantry [CS]): Memoir, circa 1915; 1 item. Typewritten reminiscence, prepared from an original manuscript by David W. Ogden, descendent of Corporal William Stephen Ray, Company I, 154th Tennessee Infantry. Ray enlisted in the Confederate army at McNary County, Tennessee, while sixteen years old. He fought at Belmont, Missouri, Shiloh, Tennessee, Corinth, Mississippi, and Atlanta, Georgia. Midway through the war, Ray was temporarily assigned to the Fifteenth Tennessee Cavalry, but he rejoined the infantry before the close of hostilities. Ray's reminiscence holds little new information on military movements, but a few interesting personal incidents are included. Most of the reminiscence describes Ray's post-war residence in Arkansas and Oklahoma, as well as his efforts on behalf of the United Confederate Veterans (Univ. of Arkansas, Fayetteville: Manuscript Resources for the Civil War, Compiled by Kim Allen Scott, 1990).

Gilmer Ross of Charlotte, N.C. In 1861 she married James Harty of Charlotte. The collection contains nine letters to Emma E. Ross before her marriage from her friend Harriette (last name unknown) of New Bern, N.C., and seventeen from her brother, Egbert A. Ross (1842-1863) written while he was attending Colonel Tew's Military Academy in Hillsborough, N.C. in 1860 and while he served as a Confederate officer with the 1st and 11th North Carolina regiments in Virginia and eastern North Carolina; a letter to Emma from her mother; and a few other items. The letters from Harriette deal largely with courtship and social life. Those from Egbert discuss life at school, troop movements, need for food, mortality of troops from disease, and other matters.

The letters in this collection include five written during the spring of 1861 pertaining to the secession movement, three written during the summer of 1863 relating to Judge Walker's appointment to a Confederate military court in Little Rock, and one written in the summer of 1865 from George C. Watkins at Corsicana, Texas, when he had been arrested for treason. Many of these letters have been published by Walter J. Walker Family. Papers, 1833-1962; 63 items. Letters and personal papers relating to the David Walker family of Washington County. The materials in this collection were donated by descendants of Charles Whiting *Walker. One letter, written by Charles in February 1860 in Lebanon, Tennessee, describes local excitement over the secession crisis in that location. Among the manuscript essays in the collection are two addresses delivered by Charles (circa 1907) concerning Civil War history, and an unsigned article about bushwhackers operating near Huntsville (Madison County) during the war. Miscellaneous documents in the collection include a January 27, 1864, appointment of David Walker to a military court under Lieutenant General Theophilus H. Holmes, and an application for membership to the United Daughters of the Confederacy completed by Nancy Walker Warren, the daughter of Charles Walker. Walker, Sue H.: Papers, 1818-1936; 1 linear foot. Letters and papers collected by Susan Howard Walker (1857-1939), daughter of James David Walker and granddaughter of Judge David Walker. Correspondence in the collection includes an April 27, 1864, letter from David Walker to a friend in Texas, written on the day his son Jacob died at Jenkins' Ferry, and another written by Sue Walker to historian David Yancey Thomas (circa 1935) detailing her recollections of Civil War incidents in Fayetteville (Washington County). Five Civil War military documents are found in the collection: three receipts for destroyed cotton in Pulaski County by Confederate authorities; General Order Number 1, issued by Colonel M. LaRue Harrison, First Arkansas Cavalry (Union), at Fayetteville (Washington County) June 16, 1864; and an oath of allegiance signed by Mary K. Stone, Fayetteville, June 20, 1864. Two printed broadsides in the collection pertain to the Civil War; a July 24, 1851, copy of the Arkansas Whig-Extra, published in Little Rock (Pulaski County), which discusses the disunion sentiment in the state at that time, and a December 30, 1862, copy of Albert Pike's Letter to General Holmes, printed on a sheet of wallpaper (Univ. of Arkansas, Fayetteville: Manuscript Resources for the Civil War, Compiled by Kim Allen Scott, 1990)

White, Isaac: Papers, 1861-1938. Assistant surgeon in the Confederate Army. Born in Charlottesville, Virginia, White graduated in 1859 from the Medical College of Virginia. He resided in Upshur County, Virginia (now West Virginia) before the war, and then in Shawsville in Montgomery County, Virginia, until his death. He served in various regiments during the war, including the 29th Virginia Infantry Regiment, the 31st Virginia Infantry Regiment, and the 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry Regiment. He also served, between September 1862 and January 1863 as an assistant surgeon at Montgomery White Sulphur Springs Hospital. The papers consist of letters from White to his wife in Shawsville, written mostly while encamped along the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in 1863 and 1864. He describes the losses to his regiment suffered during the Battle of Gettysburg (July 1863), the Battles of New Market and Spotsylvania (May 1864), and the Battle of Winchester (September 1864).
